Writer, Director, and Editor
William Harkins was born in Huntington, Long Island and raise
in Brooklyn, New York. His many jobs have included taxi cab
driver, construction worker, messenger, and real estate agent
... all while working his way through school and all of which
have influenced his filmmaking up to this point and will for
future projects.
William has his BA from Hunter College in creative writing.
While at Hunter, he was chosen as a script intern at Late
Night with Conan O' Brian , which led to work in film and
television both in New York and Los Angeles. In 2003, William
was awarded the Joseph Vasquez scholarship from New Line Cinema.
In 2004, William received his MFA in writing and directing
from CCNY's graduate film program.
In addition to Marcus' Story, his fiction films include, Ball
(2001) a 10-minute narrative, shot on mini-dv about a man
coping with his friends death after September 11th and Home
Free, an 8-minute 16mm film about a young boy who runs away
from his family on their first day in an inner city neighborhood.

William's documentaries include Tree Sellers,
a 30-minute upbeat piece about the Christmas tree sellers of
New York City and Cousin Doug, a 10-minute biographical piece
about a distant relative in upstate New York. He also has a
4-part documentary series in development One Nation: A Vision
Shared, about the virtuosic group of FSA photographers in 1930s
America.
Marcus' Story, his biggest film to date, won the Special Jury
Award from Ian Bricke of the Sundance Channel at this year's
Cityvisions Film Festival- the first festival the film had entered.
William continues to focus on telling American stories. He is
currently working on a feature length screenplay about real
estate agents in downtown Manhattan.
